Students who are seeking a career in elementary school teaching may complete their lower division (freshman and sophomore) requirements for transfer at College of the Desert.  Program requirements vary from one institution to another.  It is important for you to research the schools to which you are applying, so you may complete all university admission requirements and as many of the lower division requirements for this major as you can prior to transfer.

The California State University major in Liberal Studies with the Multiple Subject Matter Preparation Program (MSMPP) option is approved by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC) as a baccalaureate waiver program into a multiple subjects credential program.  All campuses except the Cal-Maritime Academy offer this program.

Elementary school teachers must demonstrate competence in all subjects relevant to the elementary classroom, including English and communication, math, science, social studies and human development, the arts, and physical education.

  • Requirements for the Liberal Studies majors are unique and C.O.D. students must select transfer classes with care.
  • Liberal Studies majors will not complete the CSU General Education Certification or I.G.E.T.C. as part of the Liberal Studies transfer program of study.
  • Instead, follow the catalogue requirements of the campus to which you wish to transfer, ensuring all university admission requirements are also met.
  • Liberal Studies Curriculum Advising Guides for CSU campuses and UC Riverside are available in the Transfer Center.

For more information about the credential program, visit the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing Web site: www.ctc.ca.gov .
