Union Bank Supports the 'Adopt a Student' Program

Union Bank, in support of the ‘Adopt a Student’ program through the Coachella Valley Economic Partnership Pathways to Success Scholarship, donated $10,000 to College of the Desert.

The donation from Union Bank is a grant to assist in scholarships for disadvantaged students. The Adopt a Student program is a collaboration between College of the Desert Foundation and Coachella Valley Economic Partnership. Through this successful program, CVEP will match moneys raised by the Foundation for student scholarships.

Pathways to Success is dedicated to assisting the Valley’s talented young people to complete a college degree and fulfill their career dreams here in the Coachella Valley. Combined with many matching partners, Pathways to Success is providing over $1.5 million in scholarship support to students who enroll at College of the Desert, CSUSB Palm Desert, UC Riverside and many universities around the country.

Funds raised translate into students receiving 2-year scholarships, educational and career counseling, and additional student support to ensure the students meet academic performance standards for their scholarships.

“COD students surround us in our daily lives and have long formed the backbone of the local workforce and economy,” stated Jim Hummer, College of the Desert Foundation Assistant to the President/Executive Director. “They make the Coachella Valley work each and every day. They are our nurses, police and fire fighters, architects, auto mechanics and more.”

A coalition of Coachella Valley institutions and organizations led by the Coachella Valley Economic Partnership (CVEP) have created a regional structure to link the award of scholarships and focused student success support for low income undergraduate students to a valley-wide effort that is creating a broad range of newly developing career pathways as a means of diversifying the local economy.

This initiative links business, education, regional economic development and a variety of local non-profits under the unifying goal of improving college going rates and college success for our under-served youth. This proposal named "Pathways to Success", is the first effort of its kind in the Coachella Valley and seeks to build upon existing partnerships that have been created by the Coachella Valley Economic Partnership (CVEP) through its Career Pathways Initiative.

In addition, Pathways to Success will also serve as a mechanism to link together the various scholarship giving organizations and student support systems in the Coachella Valley for the benefit of scholarship recipients.  The proposal capitalizes on the history of wide spread collaborative initiatives that have been successfully implemented in the Coachella Valley.
