COD’s Commencement is May 23

Commencement is the highlight of the year for COD faculty, staff and especially the students. The evening, Friday, May 23 at 7 p.m., is filled with color and pageantry, short speeches, and the traditional caps and gowns and distribution of hard-earned diplomas. Last year the College added another element to the ceremony that will be carried on again this year. The hard work of the students who earn certificates in their chosen fields of study will also be acknowledged. The ceremony will be held at The Show at the Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa. Tickets are required for admission. For those unable to attend or who live out of the country, the Commencement ceremony will also be available live-stream. Details to watch COD’s 2014 Commencement ceremony live online will be posted on the College’s website,  0001.jpg

Over 900 students are eligible to walk in the graduation processional and almost 400 are expected to participate. Certificate-earning students will don the same regalia but, instead of a tassel on their cap, they will drape a red cord over the shoulders of their gowns. Over 140 certificates have been earned in the past year. Many students have earned more than one. In addition to the students, a large number of faculty and staff attend the ceremony. The college continues to have a crowd of over 1,600 observers turn out to cheer on family members and friends who are graduating.
Highlights will include: presentation of colors by COD’s Public Safety Academy Honor Guard and welcome remarks by COD Superintendent/President Joel L. Kinnamon, Ed.D. Assistant Professor, Automotive Technology/Advanced Transportation and Academic Senate President Douglas Redman, will present the Faculty of the Year Award to Leif Ericson Jordan, Ph.D., associate professor, mathematics, who will deliver an address. The City Manager of Indio, Dan Martinez, will be the keynote speaker. He is a 1984 COD graduate and will share his own educational journey that will inspire everyone in attendance. Executive Vice President, Student Success and Student Learning Anna Davies will introduce the two students who have been selected to represent the student body. Richard Fike and Todor Nikolov, each with a perfect 4.0 GPA, will share his own unique story about what brought him to COD and how COD has helped mold his future.

Degrees will be awarded by President Kinnamon and Chair of the Board of Trustees Becky Broughton.
Entertainment will be provided by COD students under the direction of Music Professor Darlene Romano, D.M.A. Six of the eight performers are current COD music majors: Alden Dickey, Krystofer Do, Austin Lawrence, Ramon Martinez, Carrick O’Dowd, and Kenneth Ugarte. Former COD student Cliff Plummer and employee Michael Hadley round out the ensemble, all of which recently appeared in COD’s production of Les Miserables.
Following Commencement, students, families and friends will gather in the lobby at The Show for a reception and refreshments sponsored by the COD Alumni Association.
