Four student directors plus four short one-act plays equals two unique nights of theatre at College of the Desert. Theatre majors are currently in rehearsals for what very well may be the most nerve-rattling component of the 2013 – 2014 season as four student directors prepare to present four short one-act plays featuring fellow student cast members. This opportunity is truly a unique endeavor at College of the Desert and one that Assistant Professor of Theatre, Tres Dean, says is vital for any theatre program.

“It is extremely important for theatre students to gain an understanding of the directing process, from conceptualization to implementation”, says Dean. “These four one-acts, which vary in length from 10 to 20 minutes, are an enormoPhotoFunia-172f83f_o.jpgus challenge for our students. They are completely in charge of every aspect of their show, which forces them to take responsibility for their choices.”

“The directing process presents so many challenges,” says current theatre major and student director, Miranda Hane. “You have to look at the whole picture, from what your actors are doing creatively to what is going on technically with the show. It all has to go along with your (the director’s) vision. It’s a great training opportunity, tremendous challenge, and wonderful experience for us.”    Slide7.JPG

The One-Acts features the directing talents of first-time student directors Miranda Hane (pictured above right), Chris Hoggatt (pictured right), Paul Mackey (pictured below left), and Renee Bourgeau (pictured left). All of the technical elements of production will also be designed by current COD theatre students and technical classes headed by Technical Director, J.W.
