College of the Desert (COD) Foundation has received a generous donation from BIGHORN Golf Club Charities in the amount of $150,000. The money will help to fund design, construction, furniture, fixtures, and technology for a 1,000 square foot, full-service facility for veterans, to be named the BIGHORN Golf Club Charities Veterans Resource Center. The building is set to open in the fall of 2012.

“This wonderful gift will provide much needed assistance to the more than 400 veterans who currently attend college here,” says Jim Hummer, Assistant to the President/Executive Director of COD Foundation. “Ultimately, the Resource Center will provide a safe and welcoming environment for military veterans and their dependants to receive information about their VA benefits, academic and counseling support, and peer to peer camaraderie.”

The Resource Center will include two offices, a reception desk, a study/tutoring area, four computer stations, a lounge area with flat panel television, and access to a printer, copier, and a fax machine. The Center will provide easy access to all major student service areas such as Admissions & Records, Financial Aid, the Bookstore, Health Services, and several other special programs. There will also be a Veterans Specialist, Academic Counselor, and Mental Health Specialist on staff.

Through its Veterans Affairs Program, COD currently provides enrolled veterans and their dependants with access to an Admissions & Records Veterans Specialist, who gives information and guidance with regard to accessing military benefits for educational purposes and basic academic advisement with regard to degree and graduation requirements.

"Our service men and women deserve a top-notch education, counseling, and the opportunities to succeed in their hometown," says R.D. Hubbard, Chairman of BIGHORN Golf Club and BIGHORN Golf Club Charities. "It is a privilege to take part in this educational process. These members of our Armed Forces have stood strong and made us proud. Now it's time for us to give back and to make them proud!"

BIGHORN Golf Club Charities is a 501c 3 focused on funding college scholarships, as well as providing valuable educational opportunities, including English as a Second Language, and specialty service classes within the Coachella Valley.
