COD Residency with Jazz Pianist, Composer, and Educator, Dr. Reed Gratz
Jazz pianist and composer, Dr. Reed Gratz, will present a free concert at College of the Desert (COD) on April 14, 2012, at 7 p.m. in the Pollock Theatre. Gratz will perform with a faculty ensemble featuring Dr. Anthony Fesmire, guitar, Mikael Jacobson, bass, and Matthew Howe, drums. The performance is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. For ticket inquiries, contact the COD Ticket line at 760-733-2565.
The performance will follow a jazz clinic given by Gratz at 1 p.m. on April 14. COD students and invited area high school students will work with Gratz to learn aspects of jazz performance and composition. The events are part of COD’s Carol Meier Visiting Artist Series. “The jazz studies program at College of the Desert has grown significantly in the past four years,” says Dr. Anthony Fesmire, Associate Professor of Music at COD. “Dr. Gratz is a world-class jazz performer, composer, and educator, and bringing him to COD presents a rare opportunity for students and the community to not only hear this world-class musician live but learn firsthand from his extensive experience.”
Dr. Reed Gratz has had an impressive career as a jazz pianist, composer, and educator. He is a Professor of Music and department chair at the University of La Verne. Gratz has taught at Washington State University, University of Miami, University of Innsbruck, Utrecht Conservatory and Leiden University in the Netherlands and as a visiting professor of music at Claremont McKenna College for ten years.
Reed has been awarded a jazz composition grant from the NEA; a research grant in
African-American music by the NEH; two Senior Fulbright Lectureships, one at the
University of Innsbruck, the other, the Walt Whitman Distinguished Chair of American
Culture Studies at the Leiden University. Six of his recent CDs are Below Sea Level, Piano, View From the South, The Reed Gratz Band featuring Michael O’Neil, Quaadrille, and Piano Two.
Gratz has performed with George Russell, Herb Alpert, Bruce Hornsby, John Patitucci, Brandon Fields, Barbara Morrison, Alex Acuña, Bobby Shew, Buddy DeFranco, Scott Henderson, Konstantin Ruchadze, Max Bennett, Peter Noone, Jeff Healey, and many others.
