Street Fair Announces a Location Change, Summer Hours and Appoints New Manager
The Street Fair ‘Summer Season’ begins June 1, 2013. During the months of June, July, August, and September, the Street Fair hours are shortened from 7 a.m. to noon. The Street Fair is held all year long on Saturday and Sunday on the COD campus in Palm Desert.
The popular weekend Street Fair will move across campus back to its original location for the summer season located on the south side of the campus, just north of Fred Waring Drive in Palm Desert. The Street Fair is moving so a major solar panel installation can take place at its current site on the college campus.
The Fair provides open-air shopping for the entire family including a selection of unique gifts for all occasions, a farmer’s market, and refreshment booths. There is free admission, parking, and entertainment.
The COD Alumni Association is a non-profit organization that organizes and runs the Street Fair. The COD Alumni Association uses its proceeds from the Street Fair to donate funds for student scholarships, grants, and gifts to COD. Since its inception 30 years ago, the Alumni Association has given more than $10 million to College of the Desert.
The College of the Desert (COD) Alumni Association Street Fair recently appointed a new manager, Betsy Young. She has been the assistant Street Fair manager for the past six years.
Gene Marchu, Executive Director, COD Alumni Association, commented, “We are so very excited to promote within our organization. Betsy has unbelievable talent and we are fortunate to have her join our management team.”
Young states, “I am thrilled and honored to continue working for the Alumni Association in my new position.” Young has over 20 years of management experience and an extensive retail and customer service background. She began her career working in the loss prevention department at Gottschalks where they recognized her management skills. Young was promoted to manager of the men’s clothing department and then to manager of the loss prevention department. She was encouraged back into the law enforcement field by those she came in contact with through her Gottschalks association. That eventually landed her at COD in the Security Department. Many of her hours were spent on the weekends interacting with the Alumni Association Street Fair staff. Young also worked in several other areas on campus. When the full-time position with the Street Fair was available it was a natural transition and fit for Young. “The Street Fair is a truly magical place to be and I am lucky enough to spend every weekend there with so many wonderful people,” said Young.
