The College of the Desert Dramatic Arts Company presents

The One Acts, Student Performers and Directors

Eight student directors plus eight short one-Act plays equals two unique nights of theatre. The students of the College of the Desert (COD) Dramatic Arts Company (Drama Club) are currently preparing for what many members feel to be the most nerve-rattling component of the fall semester as eight studeoneactphotosdec.jpgnt directors prepare to present eight short one-act plays featuring fellow student cast members.

The performances are scheduled on Friday, Dec. 7 and Saturday, Dec. 8, 2012, at 7 p.m. in COD’s Theatre Too on the Palm Desert Campus. Tickets are general admission $10, and $8 for students. All proceeds benefit the College of the Desert Dramatic Arts Company.

This opportunity is truly a unique endeavor at College of the Desert as currently no directing classes are offered at COD. This is something Assistant Professor of Theatre, Tres Dean, says is about to change.

“It is extremely important for theatre students to gain an understanding of the directing process, from conceptualization to implementation,” says Dean. “We as a department are in the process of creating those opportunities. Next semester we will be offering a script analysis/directing class. These eight one-acts, which vary in length from 10 to 20 minutes, are an enormous challenge for our students. They aroneactsposterdec.jpge completely in charge of every aspect of their show, which forces them to take responsibility for their choices.”

“The directing process presents so many challenges,” says current theatre major and two-time student director, Jennifer Kiehl. “The director must focus on everything everyone in the show is doing. You have to look at the whole picture, from what your actors are doing creatively to what is going on technically with the show. It all has to go along with your (the director’s) vision. It’s a great training opportunity, tremendous challenge, and wonderful experience for us.”

The One-Acts (mainly comedies with a few short dramas in between) feature the directing talents of two-time student directors Danika Valenzuela, Diana Valle, and the aforementioned Kiehl. The first-time directors include Steve Armstrong, Anthony Gomez, Christopher A. Moody, Carene Riale, and Liridona Leti.
