College of the Desert’s Fourth Annual Youth Robotics Camps are taking place across the Coachella Valley this summer, inviting young minds to discover the wonders of science while creating LEGO robots. The robotics camps are aimed at middle school students with activities that enforce team building and interaction through hands-on learning. The second of three series of robotics camps gets underway in Palm Desert on July 30 followed by a final camp in Palm Springs in mid-August.
“The free COD summer robotics camps program was made possible through the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office and Time Warner Cable. The camp offers middle school students an opportunity to learn about topics in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM),” said Avante Simmons, College of the Desert’s CTE Transitions Specialist. “
Time Warner Cable is the presenting sponsor for the summer camps that culminate with a Science & Technology Festival, at Westfield Palm Desert, on August 11, 2012 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “This exciting learning experience for middle school youth is a way to help students explore STEM careers while using their imagination and creativity,” said Elli Tourje, Community Relations Specialist, Time Warner Cable. The youth robotics camps and Science & Technology Festival are well in line with Time Warner Cable’s Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) five-year, $100 million initiative to address America’s declining proficiency in science, technology, engineering and math.”
The first of three hands on robotics camps at the Mecca/Thermal Campus sponsored by Time Warner Cable. Students were introduced to LEGO Mindstorm kits that they assembled using STEM skills working with computers and LEGO pieces to create a robot.
College of the Desert has offered the free camps to over 100 valley middle school students each year with the goal of getting them excited about science, technology, engineering and math. The July 30-August 10 robotics camp will be in Palm Desert at COD’s PaCE Center and the final camp will take place Aug 13-17 in Palm Springs at College of the Desert’s Desert Energy Enterprise Center (DEEC). The camps are almost full though a waiting list has formed for interested youth between the ages of 10-13.
