Ceremonies Honoring COD Students Have Been Planned
As the spring semester comes to an end, several ceremonies honoring College of the Desert (COD) students have been planned for the month of May, 2012.
Some ceremonies were held last week. However, several more have been planned for the next two weeks. If you are interested in attending, please call the number listed for more information. All events are held on the COD campus unless otherwise stated.
It all begins with the students who will be inducted to COD’s Beta Rho Iota Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, on Monday, May 14. The ceremony will begin at 7 p.m. in the Cravens Student Services Center, Multipurpose Room. At the same event, three COD students will be honored for their selection to the 2012 Phi Theta Kappa All-California Academic Team. Information: 760.862.1369.
The Transfer Recognition Ceremony will be held Wednesday, May 16 in the Hilb Building at 4 p.m. Over 130 students who are transferring to a four-year university will be honored at the event. Three hundred guests are expected to attend to support the transfer students. Information: 760.862.1351.
Students that participate in the TRiO program at College of the Desert will be recognized on Thursday, May 17 during the TRiO Graduation and Transfer Celebration. The ceremony begins at 6 p.m. in the Cravens Student Services Center, Multipurpose Room. The program is designed to provide comprehensive counseling and to assist students in meeting the challenges of graduating from COD and transferring to a four-year university of their choice. On Friday, May 18, the Upward Bound Award Ceremony is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in the Hilb Building. The program is designed to assist first generation college students and prepares local high school students to enter college and graduate with a bachelor’s degree. Upward Bound provides participants with supplemental counseling, academic coursework and leadership development workshops. Information: 760.773.2541.
A colorful ceremony will induct College of the Desert students into the nursing ranks at the McCallum Theatre on Thursday May 24 at 2 p.m. Approximately fifty students have earned the Associate Degree in Nursing and are now eligible to take the licensing examination to become Registered Nurses. The pinning ceremony begins at 2 p.m. in the McCallum Theatre, 73000 Fred Waring Drive, Palm Desert. Nursing faculty will speak at the event as well as pin the eligible students. The 23rd College of the Desert (COD) Public Safety Academy (PSA) Basic Peace Officer Training Awards Ceremony will be held on Thursday, May 24th, at 6 p.m. at the McCallum Theatre, 73000 Fred Waring Drive, Palm Desert. The ceremony will be preceded by a formal cadet inspection in front of the McCallum at 5 p.m. Approximately 60 Module II and III cadets will be receiving certificates for meeting the training requirements prescribed by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training for Level II and III-Reserve Peace Officers in the State of California. The finale to the academic school year is the Commencement ceremony set for Friday, May 25 at 7:30 p.m. on Boone Football Field. Some 600 students will be graduating and approximately 325 will be participating in the evening ceremony. Two students graduating with highest honors will be speaking along with College President Jerry Patton and Dr. Fred Jandt, Dean, CSUSB Palm Desert Campus. Outstanding Faculty of the Year 2011-12, Carol Amelia Lasquade, Coordinator/Counselor, Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS), Cooperative Agencies Resources for Education (CARE) & CalWorks, will also deliver an address.
