Tutoring

TASC Labs provide a variety of academic support tools for all registered and actively enrolled College of the Desert students, including live tutors at Palm Desert, Indio, and Mecca. Schedules vary based on student tutor availability. Walk into one of those labs and check the schedule. Virtual tutor support is offered 24/7 to active COD students via Smarthinking. Links to this service can be found on every student Canvas menu, including the Online Tutoring link embedded on the left side panel.

Drop-in peer tutors support subjects taught at College of the Desert, including:
  • English
  • Humanities
  • Mathematics
  • Foreign Languages
  • Natural and Social Sciences
For all writing assignments, TASC tutors encourage students to write, re-write, and edit their papers with perseverance. This process directs students to do the following:
  1. Understand the prompt or assignment based on instructor's guidelines
  2. Recognize the context of the paper in relation to course and subject matter
  3. Identify and clarify thesis statements and topic sentences as appropriate
  4. Recognize citation styles and employ the correct method of citing sources
TASC tutors do not write on papers, but they show students how they can improve their piece and access resources that promote excellence in composition. TASC tutors encourage the writing process.

Additional Information and/or Messages about Tutoring

“The tutor’s ability to guide and collaborate is of considerable consequence to the learning process.”

Our tutors come from a variety of backgrounds. All of our tutors desire to help our students achieve their academic goals and are trained to work as a team to provide the best quality of service possible. They are employed to support, empower, and provide the guidance to excel independently after leaving the Center.

TASC tutors are available to review and explain assignments. They also help clarify and understand what the instructor expects. Furthermore, our tutors can assist students in understanding the material within their textbooks by using models, examples, and other resources to aid students.

In order to be considered for a tutor position, applicants must come to the Tutoring Center at the TASC Lab on the Palm Desert Campus, and speak to one of the Tutorial Coordinators. Students who are referred by an instructor will be contacted by one of the Tutorial Coordinators. Candidates will be asked to come and to start the application process and participate in an interview.

Tutor training is available prior to each semester. The training consists of theory combined with practical instruction and application. California Learning and Reading Association has certified this Tutor Training Program. Call the Tutoring Center to obtain the dates for the next tutor training session.
