Health Sciences offers two degree programs and two certificate programs that prepare men and women for careers in health occupations. Educational pathways include both theoretical instruction on campus and clinical experience in local hospitals and clinics.

Health Sciences does not offer medically related technician (surgical, dental*, phlebotomy, X-ray, ultrasound, etc.) or therapist type courses. There is no longer a respiratory therapy program at COD. 

Application Schedules: Note that starting dates that are on a weekend will move to the following Monday.  End dates on weekends will move back to the Friday before.

  • RN program: March 1-21 for Fall semester and August 1-21 for Spring semester.
  • LVN program: April 1-21 for Fall semester.
  • Program Re-entry and Transfers: last 3 weeks of the semester, due by Tuesday of Finals Week unless otherwise noted on the application form.
  • LVN to RN Transition program: see announcements on Advanced Placement page.
  • ECE Mentors: accepted year round with committee review in January and April.
  • ECE Associate Teacher Certificate: applications due by October 31 for Fall and March 31 for Spring.

    Due to the increasing registration issues we have experienced over the past three years the following policy change will be in effect beginning Fall 2011:

    All clinical sections for the RN and LVN programs will be assigned.


  • Campus Child Care: The McCarthy Child Development and Training center serves children 12 months to 5 years old. It is state funded providing care for school hours as well as breakfast, lunch, and/or snack depending on the hours of care. Parents must provide income eligibility and need of services. Please call 760-862-1308 for more information.

  • Current Students: The appropriate avenue for program evaluation, suggestions and/or complaints are through the course evaluations at the end of each semester. Specific complaints directed to Faculty, Staff, Director, or Dean will not be entertained if anonymous. If any student feels they are being treated unfairly, there is a grievance procedure outlined in the college catalog.

Nursing Program Announcements

NOTICE: While Social Security Numbers are not required to take Nursing coursework, the facilities used for clinical instruction do require them.  Social Security Numbers are also required for Board examinations at the completion of the various healthcare programs. If you do not have a Social Security Number please contact the HS/ECE office for further instruction.

Nursing Program Options: 
Current increased enrollment numbers in the RN program have made placement in the 30-Unit Option and as a transfer applicant difficult.  Please continue to monitor the Nursing website.

30-Unit Option:

  • Application available after meeting with Director of Nursing.

Transfer to COD Registered Nursing Program from another college:

  • See Advanced Placement page. Applications accepted only after Spring break for the Fall 2012 semester.

NOTICE: Applicants are advised to not submit official transcripts to this division unless you are submitting an application packet. Official transcripts received separate from an application packet will not be retained by the division (they will be shredded). Please call if you have questions regarding this requirement.
