Granting unit credit by examination for a course is based on the principle that previous experience, training, or instruction is the equivalent of a specific course taught by the college.
A student seeking credit by examination will receive a letter grade (A, B, C, D, F, P, NP) and grade points in the same way as if enrolled in a regular course. A student may challenge a course only once. Credit earned according to this policy shall not count toward determination of eligibility for Veteran’s benefits. Credit by examination is possible in selected courses only.
There is a non-refundable $25.00 fee for the Credit by Examination Request Form (CERF). It is important students make sure they meet the eligibility requirements indicated in the ELIGIBILITY CHECK LIST below:

I am currently enrolled at COD I am not on Academic Probation
I have completed at least 12 COD units I have not earned college credit in an advanced course
Transcript on all previous course work attached.
I I have not received a letter grade for this or an equivalent course (A,B,C,D,F,P/NP,CR/NC) at College of the Desert or any other college or university.
THEN:
Meet with a counselor or faculty advisor to discuss eligibility for Credit by Examination.
Meet with the Division Dean to determine which departments currently offer Credit by Exam.
Meet with the instructor to obtain verbal approval s/he will administer the Credit by Exam. |
Once students have verified they meet the eligibility requirements by meeting with a counselor/advisor they will obtain approval from the instructor, and secure the signature from the applicable division dean; lastly the Credit by Exam Form that includes all required signatures must be presented for payment of $25.00 to the Bursar’s Office to pay the exam fee.
The Bursar’s Office will stamp the form which must then be taken back to the exam instructor for grade recording.
Be sure to complete the check lists above before paying the non-refundable fee for the form.
