The ASC Computer and Internet Use Policy.

Who can use ASC Internet Services?

To use Internet services at the ASC, a student must be enrolled in either a course with a required lab that meets in the ASC or an independent lab section at the ASC. For more information about enrollment, see Using the ASC. Students must also read, understand and sign the ASC Computer and Internet Use Policy card, indicating that they agree to abide by the Center’s policies.

Internet services are intended for academic use only. Students will not be allowed to use the Internet for personal business, playing games, shopping, etc.; e-mail is not currently available. Accessing pornographic or hate sites is also not allowed. Courts have ruled in several cases recently that displaying such material in a public access institution such as the ASC constitutes harassment against other users of the lab. Thank you for your consideration in this matter.

How do I get help?

If students have never used a computer before or never accessed the Internet before, the ASC has a number of services to help them. To begin with, the ASC staff is trained in basic Internet operations and search methods and will be glad to help. Hand out information on citing Internet sources in research papers is available in the ASC Writing Lab. Finally, COD also offers Internet courses through its Business Division.

Internet services at the ASC have been customized to assist students in research. For instance, Internet always opens on the Home Page of the COD web site. So if students need information about COD services, policies, current course offerings, Library services, or access to an instructor’s web page, these things are just a mouse click away. We have also reserved a variety of useful sites (CNN, the New York Times, the Library of Congress, etc.) as “Bookmarks.” Computers in the various labs also have sites saved that focus on specific disciplines (i.e. math related sites in the Math Lab). Also, instructors who want their students to visit particular Internet sites may send us a list of those sites and we will reserve them as Bookmarks under the instructor’s name for student use.
