The Intensive English Academy (IEA) is a high quality intensive English program that will assist students to learn English skills that will be needed for entering an American university or college. The program stresses academic English preparation and provides TOEFL test training.
The IEA is also ideal for students wanting to learn English and experience American culture. Our resort location makes it a great place for students to learn English, enjoy outdoor activities and make new friends!
Our beautiful location in one of the most famous resort towns in California - Palm Springs - makes the IEA a perfect choice to begin your studies. What Will I Study at the IEA?
Classes:
Whether you want to learn English to prepare for university study, or want to experience life in America, the Intensive English Academy (IEA) has a program for you! We offer both Standard Programs of 8 and 16 weeks in length and an 8 Week Summer Accelerated Program.
The IEA offers courses from Beginning to Advanced levels. Students must complete 16 weeks in each level in order to advance. NOTE: Students who successfully complete the 8 Week Summer Accelerated Program can advance to the next level!
Students learn through assignments, field trips, in-class activities, and homework. Students are encouraged to actively participate in their classes.
Our teachers are all trained in English language instruction and enjoy working with our international students. Many of our teachers teach at the college level and are aware of the English skills required to succeed in college/university. Our goal is to teach you English and help you learn about American life and culture!
IEA Standard Programs:
IEA Standard Programs offer 30 hours per week of instruction including 25 hours per week of classroom instruction and 5 hours per week in our Foreign Language Lab using the latest computer technology. Standard programs are offered in August, October, January and March. Students in the Standard program must complete 16 weeks of study to advance to the next level.

IEA 8 Week Summer Accelerated Program:
IEA 8 Week Summer Accelerated Program offers 32 hours per week of instruction including 27 hours per week of classroom instruction and 5 hours in our Foreign Language Lab. This program is offered in June. Students completing this program will advance to the next level after 8 weeks.

Certificates of Completion:
All students receive official grade reports at the end of each session. Grade reports indicate letter grades and are used to determine if the student is able to advance to the next level.
Upon completion of our Advanced Level (Level 3) students will receive a Certificate of Completion indicating their achievement.
In addition, students who complete our Advanced Level are eligible to enter College of the Desert without the TOEFL!

How To Apply to the IEA:
International student application to the Intensive English Academy (IEA) is easy and the response time is fast! Just complete these simple steps and you can begin your studies in beautiful Palm Springs, California!
STEP 1: Download the International Student Application:
To apply for programs starting after that date, download the 2009-2010 application
If you cannot download the application, you can request the International Student Application by sending an email to cdelgado@collegeofthedesert.edu or by clicking on this link: Request Additional Information.
STEP 2: Submit the following documents to the Intensive English Academy
1. International Student Application
2. $25.00 application fee
3. Verification of financial sponsorship
(Click on Cost Estimates 09-10 for tuition and living expense estimates for all IEA programs)
4. 2 passport photographs
5. Housing Application
6. Proof of high school graduation (recommended for college bound students)
NOTE: All students must be 18 years of age or older
7. Application materials should be mailed to: Intensive English Academy, 43-500 Monterey Avenue, Palm Desert, California 92260, U.S.A.
The TOEFL is NOT required for IEA applicants!
STEP 3: When you receive your acceptance documents and I-20:
1. Contact the US Embassy in your home country to apply for the F-1 visa.
