African Art Showcase

Art History instructor Dana Martin will present a selection of the Walter N. Marks Art Center’s African Art collection.

Donated to the College of the Desert in 2007, the Lester Safier collection of 90 African art pieces from the 19^th and 20^th centuries is an excellent representation of some of the most significant themes in African art history, including ancestor and spirit figures, masks, ritual objects, and status symbols.

Examples range from Tanzania to the Ivory Coast, and is a wonderful resource to better understand the role art played in African society, ritual, and culture.
