Jazz at the Pollock - Guest Artist
College of the Desert’s first guest artist concert of the 2019-2020 “Jazz at the Pollock” season will feature modern guitar virtuoso, Fareed Haque.
Haque will be joined by Baba Elefante on bass and Steve Dixon on drums. The concert
will be held in the Pollock Theatre at 7 p.m. on Friday, November 8. Admission is
free with a suggested donation of $5 for students, $10 for public.
Voted the “Best World Guitarist” in the 2009 Guitar Player Magazine Readers Poll, Haque is steeped in classical and jazz traditions, and his unique command of the guitar and different musical styles inspire his musical ventures with tradition and fearless innovation.
A graduate of Northwestern University, Haque came to the attention of multi-instrumentalist Howard Levy and joined his Latin-fusion group Chevere. Through Levy, Haque was introduced to Paquito D’Rivera and began a long and fruitful relationship with the Cuban NEA Jazz Master. Numerous world tours and recordings including Manhattan Burn, Celebration, Havana Cafe, Tico Tico and Live at the MCG followed. Especially notable is the classic and award-winning, Reunion, featuring Haque along with Arturo Sandoval, Danilo Perez, Giovanni Hidalgo, Mark Walker and David Fink.
Haque continues to tour and record extensively, having just come off of a tour with drumming legend, Billy Cobham. As an educator, he is documenting his unique and often unorthodox teaching methods in a series of interactive video courses through TrueFire.

Each season, the “Jazz at the Pollock” series presents faculty, student and guest
artist concerts that take advantage of the intimacy of the College’s Pollock Theatre
and showcase the Jazz Studies program at College of the Desert.
