College of the Desert is working hard to improve online course retention and success rates. What we know is that online students usually struggle because they feel disconnected from the course, their instructor, and other students. But there are ways to help bring a sense of community to your online course.
Several COD faculty will be leading workshops this fall and all faculty are encouraged to come find out things they can do this semester to improve the sense of community online students need to be successful!
Creating Community the First Time You Teach Online with David Goetz
Come talk with a faculty member who is planning his first online class. What do we need to try the FIRST time out? How do we balance content with tools and building a sense of community online? How do we fit it all in without overwhelming the students or ourselves? Professor David Goetz will share his experiences in this workshop.
Humanizing the Online Experience with Courtney Doussett
These sessions will focus on helping online faculty be centered around incorporating their presence and awareness into their students’ learning while helping students collaborate and construct meaning in an active, student-centered learning environment.
Using VoiceThread to Humanize Your Online Courses with Donna Greene
COD now has access to VoiceThread, a tool that lets instructors and students communicate and collaborate on projects and assignments. Come learn more about this tool in preparation for your Winter or Spring courses!
Increased Engagement = Increased Student Success with Sara Butler
Come to this workshop to learn and discuss various ways to try and engage your online students using Canvas tools like Collaborations, Discussions, & Conferences. You can bring assignments and we can work on converting them from individual to group assignments. We will also talk about the ideal types and amount of instructor contact and feedback that would encourage student engagement and success. In addition, we will talk about ways to use Canvas to increase student engagement in face-to-face classes.
Using Conferences and the Big Blue Button in CANVAS with Lynn York
Come find out an easy way to use CANVAS to meet virtually with students for office hours or one-on-one conferences!
All workshops count for FLEX credit.
