College of the Desert is working hard to improve online course retention and success rates. What we know is that online students usually struggle because they feel disconnected from the course, their instructor, and other students. But there are ways to help bring a sense of community to your online course.
Several COD faculty will be leading workshops this fall and all faculty are encouraged to come find out things they can do this semester to improve the sense of community online students need to be successful!
Creating Community the First Time You Teach Online with David Goetz
Come talk with a faculty member who is planning his first online class. What do we need to try the FIRST time out? How do we balance content with tools and building a sense of community online? How do we fit it all in without overwhelming the students or ourselves? Professor David Goetz will share his experiences in this workshop.
Humanizing the Online Experience with Courtney Doussett
These sessions will focus on helping online faculty be centered around incorporating their presence and awareness into their students’ learning while helping students collaborate and construct meaning in an active, student-centered learning environment.
You can see Dr. Doussett's workshop on YouTube: "Humanizing the Online Experience" and review her PowerPoint, which is fully of great tips and tools! Humanizing Online Learning
