Student Placements

COD students in the early childhood program participate in student teaching lab placements in ECE 46a Observation and Assessment and ECE 47 Practicum courses. Each semester students are placed with a Mentor Teacher from the COD program who has the qualifications of at least a Master Teacher in the CA Permit System and has more than two years of teaching experience, receives at least a score of 5 on the ECERS, ITERS or SACCERS rating scales and meets additional criteria developed by COD's Mentor Program for teacher/child interactions.

Students can prepare for their Mentor Placement by viewing the slide presentation of current mentor teachers and completing the forms necessary to volunteer in an early childhood home or center. The slide presentation is available on Canvas for the courses.

Students must verify they are free of TB by having a TB skin test or chest x-ray. ECE students enrolled in the program can have these tests completed with the College Nurse. A list of enrolled students is provided to the College Nurse to verify participation. View the TB Test form, which you need to take to the nurse. Appointments must be made with the College Nurse. Students who repeatedly fail the skin test because they have had certain immunizations as a child must present a chest x-ray at their own expense through their own doctor. The TB verification must be presented to the Professor and the Mentor Teacher before a student may work with children.
